We are members of a Northeast Dallas neighborhood called Merriman Park/University Manor and we have worked with a number of city officials to clean up the Skillman and Abrams corridor leading to the new Lake Highlands Town Center and to make the commercial area safer so our residents can continue to frequent neighborhood stores. At this time, the commercial area has become saturated with Payday Lenders/Cash Stores, Liquor stores and, because we back up to the White Rock Greenbelt, we have more than our share of chronically homeless.
Our neighborhood was started in 1955, with other houses populating the area throughout the 60's. At this time we have 700 residences in our neighborhood. We are surrounded by the White Rock DART Station, Northwest Highway, Abrams and Skillman. All of these areas are populated with Payday Lenders/Cash Stores, Liquor Stores, Bars, many encampments of the chronically homeless citizens. We have two Churches in our neighborhood and a neighborhood School, Hotchkiss Elementary, where most all of the students are being bused in from a high crime area known as Five Corners.
Keeping our neighborhood safe has required a great deal of work from residents. We have a VIP Patrol Group, Crime Watch and an email list of about 415 email addresses for quick time sensitive information, especially any criminal activity.
